Fun activites for summer

Creating fun for your kids when you have no money!
I grew up in what I consider an average middle class home.  We always had enough money for our basic needs but if we wanted to do something costly usually we had to improvise and my mother was so great at that. She could come up with some of the most fun an inexpensive fun things to keep us entertained and yes this was before pinterest. I thought would share some of my favorite old school memories that might help you as summer approaches, and you want to have some fun free to cheap stuff to do at home with the kids. One of the easiest and cheapest things to do was make playdough. Most families have these ingredients at home. My mom would let me stand on a chair and put in the ingredients, and she would usually stir cause you are using low heat, and then I got to mash it all together when it was done. Lots of fun and then she would just bring out cookie cutters, and we have like 2 hours of just playing with playdough
Basic ingredient ratios:
2 cups flour
2 cups warm water
1 cup salt
2 Tablespoons vegetable oil
food coloring (liquid, powder, or unsweetened drink mix)
scented oils
Mix all of the ingredients together, and stir over low heat. The dough will begin to thicken until it resembles mashed potatoes.

When the dough pulls away from the sides and clumps in the center, as shown below, remove the pan from heat and allow the dough to cool enough to handle.

Planting experiment
When buying some seeds in the stores you can usually get them as cheap as a dollar to a couple bucks. You can always buy a flat of Mason jars for as well very cheap at Wal-mart. We would go and fill our jars with dirt plant the seeds, water and then often we would also paint our jars so we had colorful jars that we would watch and wait to see our little plants grow.

Colored Rocks
More then likely you have plenty of rocks in your back yard or at least close by. Another fun simple and easy thing to do with your kids is coloring rocks. It sounds simple but kids love to paint and what I do is we put the collared rocks in the garden next to plants. The kids loved it. All you need is some paints and some rocks and your creative imagination to do this fun activity.
